We spent the afternoon exploring the house and grounds of Calke Abbey, National Trust property. With peeling paintwork and overgrown courtyards, Calke Abbey tells the story of the dramatic decline of a country house estate. The house and stables are little restored, with many abandoned areas vividly portraying a period in the 20th century when numerous country houses did not survive to tell their story.

The boat engine would start! Flat battery?! Cycled to a car spares shop and bought a 12v battery charger/maintainer. Luckily it sorted the problem! Finally underway we pottered on up the canal to Whittington and found a peaceful mooring for the night.

We didn’t move on in the boat today. Retrieved the van (Acorn) using the electric bike and we drove into Tamworth. Then parked Acorn at Whittington further up the canal and walked 3.5 miles back down the towpath to Oak.
